Description

This is a piece I did for a game proposal. My friend Stynky was the model for this. He makes a good pirate and he is so adaptable for different looks.

My favorite part of the drawing was getting the feel of wet sand. It was loads of fun to do.

This drawing was done from a photograph taken by Mark Johnson, a very fine artist himself and my favorite photographer. Mark and Stynky did drive to the coast and Mark took several shots as Stynky strutted along the beach. When I got the image I was more interested in doing the water and wet sand. But like a lot of the illustrating I do, I get involved with the precieved character. Why is this pirate there? What kind of personality does he have? What does he think of himself and surroundings? I added the ship in the misty background to show he is connected with the vessel. The goal is to make the character look like he could leave, walk off frame to his dingy and row back to his ship. I started to heap a bunch of ideas on him. He stands like he's guarding his ship. He is solid and only a slight breeze moves the sash. Maybe I should stop drawing and start writing.
